Plot
Alia Bhatt plays Satyabhama Anand in Jigra, a sister who’s determined to set out on a mission to save her brother, Ankur (Vedang Raina). Both Ankur, studying in Malaysia with his cousin Hansi Dao, and Ankur are falsely implicated in a drug case and land up in a high-security prison. On a mission to clear her brother’s name and bring him back to India, Satyabhama travels to Malaysia and encounters Bhatia (Manoj Pahwa), whose own son fights a similar battle. The two families come together with Muthu (Rahul Ravindran), an ex-cop, to make an extreme effort to get their beloveds to come out of jail.
Performance
Alia Bhatt is Satyabhama and puts her foot down as a dedicated sister with no GPS for failure. One of the best things is that her expression in intense action scenes and emotional sequences makes her character look alive in the film. Ankur is played by Vedang Raina and his performance very well matches Vedang when he is so vulnerable in a high-stakes situation. Both Rahul Ravindran and Manoj Pahwa’s support roles add gravitas to the narrative with both actors delivering memorable performances that add an emotional weight to the narrative.
Direction and Screenplay
Vasan Bala appraises the slender narrative, injecting moments of suspense just well enough to keep you on your toes, but with the pace and heft that could be more adroitly worked. The screenplay, which it co-writes with Debashish Irengbam, sometimes leans a little heavy on that pivotal sibling bond and breaks into long, predictable sequences. Building on the described concept is rather interesting, however, during its very representation, the movie occasionally stalls in the moments when it fails to bring entirely new turns, as well as communicates emotions that would immerse viewers into the story.
Music
The film’s soundtrack which has been provided by Achint Thakkar and Manpreet Singh is entirely appropriate to the sentiment of the show as a whole but nothing outstanding. Thakkar has come up with a background score for the film that serves to make some scenes more important, such as the ones that would be in the prison with high tension. But, it can be noted that the emotions that the music is intended to enhance are not given much of a boost; and, while this certainly fits with an art-house film presentation, the audience may still feel that more of the auditory elements are needed in the film.
Theme
Thematically, therefore, Jigra is a story of familial love and endurance at its very basic. The thoroughness with which Satyabhama and her brother are portrayed in the novel signifies the extent to which people can go in their family interests. Another issue of the movie is a justice theme that shows the hardships of ordinary people who become victims of criminal injustice.
Conclusion
Jigra is a full-on action-packed family drama that has worked mostly because of Alia Bhatt and the topic of the film which is all about the bond of siblings. Although the high-risk scenarios thrill the audience, the lack of coherent speed and empathy below engages the audience less eagerly. All in all, it is a satisfactory watch for those fans who are fond of Alia Bhatt and who like suspenseful action dramas, however, it may not meet the expectation of those who are craving a good plot and strong impact of emotions.
